At least 14 people have been killed and around 400 injured by an earthquake which struck eastern China. The powerful tremor, which measured 5.7 on the Richter scale, is said to have destroyed 8,500 thousand homes and damaged many more. The quake hit just before 9am local time in the Jiangxi province. Around 420,000 residents have been evacuated to safer areas. Emergency officials rushed tents to the region to shelter the homeless. The government is urging people to spend the night in the open air, although temperatures could fall to just a few degrees Celsius.
