The new member states of the European Union are drafting a letter calling on Brussels to quickly reach a deal on the EU budget. That is the word from the Polish Prime Minister after meeting his British counterpart in London.

Tony Blair spoke afterwards: “We will do our best to make sure we reach a budget deal in December, we want to do that, but it’s got to be one that’s right for all countries and it has to be one in the context of what Europe can afford.” Germany’s new chancellor, Angela Merkel, who has also been visiting London, refused to take sides in a dispute over the budget.London is refusing to cut back its annual rebate from the EU, without a commitment to further reductions in farm subsidies that mostly benefit France.Compromise proposals are expected to be presented by Britain on December 5, ahead of an EU summit ten days later.
