Emotional Schroeder says farewell to power

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has shed a tear at a special military tattoo in his hometown of Hanover, organised as a farewell from office.

Critics say his policies split his party, but the centre-left leader who bows out to conservative Angela Merkel on Tuesday maintains he put Germany on the right track. It was clear the moment was too much for the 61 year old, who chose Frank Sinatra’s hit “My Way” as his political swansong.
