Fresh controversy over internet summit

world news

| |

A UN summit on the internet in Tunisia has been touched by further controversy after the head of an international media watchdog was reportedly refused entry to the country.

A colleague from the Reporters Without Borders organisation said Robert Menard was prevented by police from getting off his plane. Several European journalists claim to have been intimidated, questioned or stopped from attending public meetings around the conference. The summit is aimed partially at bringing improved communications to developing countries. But the UN has come under criticism for its choice of venue. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has expressed his concerns to Tunisian authorities about the reports of harassment of journalists attending the conference.
