The bodies of nine men and women have been recovered at sea off the coast of Sicily in Italy. They were part of a group of more than 100 illegal immigrants trying to reach the island on a wooden boat.

Their vessel ran aground on a beach in the town of Pozzalo after it got caught in an overnight storm which prevented rescue teams from reaching them. It remains unclear where the refugees came from.
