The UN war crimes tribunal has acquitted Sefer Halilovic, the highest-ranking Bosnian Muslim yet to stand trial in the Hague. Accused of failing to prevent a massacre of Bosnian Croats in 1993, he had maintained his innocence after handing himself over to the court, four years ago. A ten-year-old jail sentence had been called for by prosecutors.

However, on the former army commander’s acquittal, the presiding judge ordered his immediate release.
