Protest over France-Italy fast-train link

A big protest is planned on Wednesday against the building of a high-speed railway link between France and Italy.Town councils in the Susa Valley have called on people to take part in a march against the construction of a tunnel between the cities of Lyon and Turin.

Opponents of the 12.5 billion euro project, which is funded by both Paris and Rome and the European Commission, claim asbestos has been found in the mountain ranges where work is taking place. The project is due to be completed by 2020, and is part of plans for a European high-speed train network stretching from Portugal to Slovenia.Organisers of today’s protest have also called on locals to take part in a general strike.
