The Iraqi capital has witnessed one of its biggest terrorist attacks in recent months. At least 35 people have been killed in a suicide bombing at a restaurant popular with security forces.
More than 20 others were injured. According to witnesses, officers from several police patrols were having their breakfast at the establishment when the bomber, wearing an explosive vest, entered and blew himself up.
The blast could be heard from several kilometres away.
The attack came a day after at least six people were killed and more than 20 wounded in car bombings in a mainly Shi’ite area of Baghdad.
The US and the Iraqi government are stepping up efforts to fight the insurgency in the run-up to elections on December 15, but for now the violence shows no signs of abating.
