Record UN vote against US Cuba embargo

world news

There has been a record vote in the UN General Assembly by member countries wanting the US to end its 40 year old trade embargo with Cuba.Cuba has been under the embargo since President Fidel Castro defeated a CIA-backed assault at the Bay of Pigs in 1961.

The record vote of 182 to 4 was held for the fourteenth consecutive year. It called for a lifting of the trade, financial and travel embargo, particularly a clause penalising foreign firms. But it could be an empty victory. The measure is not binding and has had no impact on the US, with the Bush administration having recently tightened the restrictions.
