The violence gripping France appears to have spread to neighbouring countries. Assailants burned several cars overnight in Berlin and Cologne. Police say the events are not necessarily linked to those in Paris and other French cities, but commentators believe they are probably copycat attacks.
Four cars were set on fire in Cologne, and six in socially deprived areas of Berlin. In Belgium youths set fire to vehicles in several cities. One witness in Berlin says “I heard a car alarm and went into the kitchen and I heard a bang. I looked out of the window and it was a terrible sight.”
Unlike France there have been no riots accompaying the attacks.
