Final preparations are underway for tonight’s MTV Europe awards in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

Although it is a European event, American artists tend to walk away with most of the honours but leading the way this year are British acts Coldplay and Gorillaz. MTV’s creative president Brent Hansen says this year’s show will take a different direction. “The market has been dominated by R&B and hip-hop in the last few years. We’ve been able to bring in a much wider variety of rock acts than we’ve been able to do in the recent past.” Madonna is set to headline the event as she looks to silence a few critics with her first global live performance from her new album, which she hopes will reverse a recent slump in form.
