Inquiry into Dutch detention centre fire

Investigations are underway after a deadly fire at a holding centre for suspected criminals and illegal immigrants at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.Eleven people died in the blaze and a further 15 were injured. The fire began shortly after midnight and took several hours to bring under control.Officials say police are investigating allegations by detainees that guards were too slow to act and did not take reports of a fire seriously.

Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner told a press conference, however, that it appears the staff acted quickly and did all they could. He said there would now be a safety review at all similar detention centres. Officials at the Dutch National Refugee Council, which had an office at the centre, criticised the conditions there. They said the hallways between the prefabricated units were too narrow. They also say they were shocked to discover there was not a central system to unlock all the doors at once.
