Rain kills five in Italy

At least five people were killed within a few hours overnight as torrential rain battered southeastern Italy. Fifteen people were injured when six carriages of a Eurostar train travelling from Taranto to Milan were derailed in Puglia. The rain had managed to sweep away the earth beneath the rail tracks. More rain fell overnight than normally falls over a whole year in Puglia the authorities said, and Calabria and parts of Sicily were also badly affected.

Three members of a family were killed after their car plunged into a ravine when a bridge collapsed near the city of Bari. Police divers were searching for another two people who were reported missing. And south of Bari a man drowned after his car was swept away by a mudslide and the floowdaters. In Sicily near the city of Catania a person was also reported to have died.
