The Ukrainian president says an investigation into how he came to be poisoned as he campaigned for office last year is making progress.

Viktor Yushchenko is currently in the UK where he attended a dinner hosted by the Queen and held talks with the prime minister. He has told journalists the inquiry has thrown up new information about the dioxin poisoning that disfigured his face and would soon reveal who had given it to him. He fell ill after a meal with officials including Ukraine’s security services chief. However, some toxicologists say the effects of dioxin take at least three days to appear. In an interview, Yushchenko also touched on a number of other subjects, including his vision for Ukraine’s future. He wants to take the country into the World Trade Organisation and the European Union within three years.
