Centre-left leader shot dead in Italy

A senior left-wing politician in Italy’s Calabria region has reportedly been shot dead. Local media say Francesco Fortugno, the leader of a centre-left party, was killed while voting in the country’s first ever opposition primaries ahead of elections next year. Seven candidates were standing in a ballot among the members of numerous left-wing parties.
