Chirac and Schroeder set sights ahead for future

The outgoing German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, has met his French counterpart, Jacques Chirac in Paris to discuss issues related to some EU heads of state meetings in London in two weeks’ time.

Future Franco-German relations also came up. “I am convinced that the whole German government already knows or will learn that progress is only possible if it’s based on close cooperation between Germany and France,” said Schroeder. “This cooperation has always meant Europe advanced – without it, there is no progress.” Schroeder’s lost his job after his Social Democrats and the Christian Democrats struck a coalition agreement that sees Angela Merkel become chancellor.
