A meeting between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon due to take place on Tuesday has been postponed until late October. This is the second delay in what will be the first meeting between the two leaders since the with drawl of Israel from the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian hopes for the summit include the release of 20 prisoners from Israeli jails and an Israeli troop withdrawal from West Bank cities. Sharon is expected to focus on the disarment of violent Palestinian faction groups. Hours earlier Israeli soldiers shot dead three Palestinians near the Gaza border. These are the first killings of what the army said were would-be infiltrators since the Gaza withdrawal.
The Palestinians turned out to be unarmed and were apparently trying to sneak into Israel to find work.
