Officials in Indian-administered Kashmir say there is damage in the Uri, Baramullah and Kupwara areas, and many deaths are reported. Among those killed are at least 15 soldiers along the border. Hospitals in many regions in the north are being inundated with the injured.

As well as collapsed buildings, landslides have blocked main roads linking the main cities in Kashmir. With a series of aftershocks reported, there was widespread panic in the streets as far away as New Delhi. About 20,000 people were killed in January 2001 when a quake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale struck India’s western state of Gujarat.
