Before Sunday’s meeting of European Union foreign ministers in Luxembourg, around 60,000 Turks denounced the EU at a rally in Ankara.

The demonstration had been planned by the far-right Nationalist Movement Party some time in advance. Party leader Devlet Bahceli told the rally that the government should abandon the EU talks. Bahceli insisted: “We cannot accept to become a privileged partner after 25 years of talks at best.”

There was a far smaller anti-EU rally in Istanbul where, ahead of the Luxembourg meeting, the press carried dramatic headlines such as “The Last Supper”.
