The Nobel prize-winner’s season has kicked off with the award of the Medicine distinction to an Australian pair, Barry Marshall and J. Robin Warren.

They made their discovery by chance in 1982, revolutionising the way gastritis and stomach ulcers were treated, transforming the diseases from chronic and often disabling illnesses into conditions that could be tackled with short courses of antibiotics. The two men share over one million euros in prize money.
