The main union behind strikes that paralysed transport to and from the French island of Corsica has called a temporary halt to its action. After a general assembly in Bastia the STC union said it was lifting its blockade of ports until Tuesday when the island is expecting to by hit by a day of widespread strikes. There have been further violent protests against government plans to privitise the loss-making ferry operator SNCM. The company is a major employer on Corsica and unions say the sell-off will lead to job losses. The dispute has stoke nationalist tensions on the island and there have been a number of attacks against French government targets, though no one been seriously injured. The union’s announcement will be a relief to the remaining tourists still stranded on Corsica.
