The flare-up in violence in Gaza took another turn for the worse today, as Israel said it was stepping up its response to militant rocket strikes.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said he had ordered continuous military strikes on Palestinian militants.
Israel launched an air raid on Gaza overnight, firing rockets at buildings that it claims were used by militants for storing weapons.
Later the army rounded up more than 200 suspected militants in the West Bank.
It has also decided to resume targeted assassinations.
The current surge in violence comes just two weeks after Israel pulled its troops out of Gaza, and has undermined hopes that Israel’s withdrawal would lead to further peace moves.
