It is being described as a major victory for Western efforts to increase thepressure on Iran over its nuclear ambitions.

The UN nuclear watchdog has voted in favour of an EU draft resolution to have Tehran reported to the Security Council at a later date. This could eventually open the way for sanctions to be imposed. There were 22 votes in favour, one against and 12 abstentions. China and Russia, strongly opposed to the resolution, abstained. Venezuela voted against it. Earlier, Iran threatened to begin enriching uranium if the resolution was passed.
