Hurricane Rita battered low lying areas along the Texas-Louisiana border on Saturday with winds up to two hundred kilometres per hour.Hours after it hit landfall, the storm was downgraded from Category 3 to Category 1, but it still caused significant damage. As trees and power lines fell, hundreds of thousands were left without power.Downpours flooded streets and homes. Houston was deluged but escaped a direct hit as the storm strayed east from its original path. Houston’s mayor said the city’s preparations seemed to have paid off. Fires were reported in and around Houston including one at a shopping complex in Pasadena. However no injuries were reported. And there was yet more flooding in New Orleans. A protective levee patched up after Hurricane Katrina was unable to hold back the water. It was a devastating setback for the city, which was still recovering after the last storm hit just weeks ago.
