Italy’s economy minister Domenico Siniscalco has resigned from the government.

He said he was stepping down because he was scandalised over the government’s failure to take action against the governor of the central bank, Antonio Fazio, who has become embroiled in a take-over scandal. Prime minister Silvio Berlusconi may fill in temporarily for the departing minister, as he did when Siniscalco’s predecessor, Guilio Tremonti, quit last year amid coalition feuding. Fazio has been accused of using his influence to favour Italian banks in take-over deals and of tarnishing Italy’s international standing. He has denied any wrong-doing.
