Bodies and survivors still being found after Katrina

Nearly three weeks after Katrina struck and evidence of its terrible force is still being found. Search teams continue to find bodies in areas that remain flooded. The toll looks likely to be in the hundreds rather than the thousands as earlier predicted. But the scale of death is shocking nonetheless. Incredibly survivors are also still being found.

People are now returning to flood hit areas – for some this means salvaging what they can. It is estimated half of the 27,000 people who lived in the neighbourhood of Plaquemines will not return. The worst-affected areas will take months to rebuild after the waters have finally receded. It is feared entire communities will have to be levelled.
