As if Hurricane Katrina was not bad enough, Americans could be hit by another potentially devastating storm. Thousands of people have fled their homes in North Carolina’s barrier islands in anticipation of Ophelia, whose strength has varied between a hurricane and a tropical storm.

It has taken a meandering path over the last week, making it hard to predict where it might hit land. Ophelia could send an two-and-a-half metre storm surge over the coast of theCarolinas.
