A temporary ban on anchovy fishing, since 2nd July, in the Gulf of Gascogne, should be extended until the end of next year, the European Commission is saying, to save the over fished species from extinction in European waters. France and Spain are the most affected countries; Lying on the North Atlantic coastlines of both, the Bay of Biscay is the key trawling ground for the fish.

The Commission wants new scientific information before lifting the ban. It will propose the extension to EU fisheries ministers when they meet for the annual quota negotiations in December. Brussels says EU cash would be available for fishermen kept out of work.
