Turkey’s prospects of starting European Union entry talks on October 3rd have improved: Current EU president Britain has struck a deal with France which might lead toCyprus ending its obstruction. Paris had backed Nicosia’s demand for pre-negotiation recognition by Ankara. But the Franco-British proposal would make recognition of all EU states a “prior condition for accession” — still far away — and not a requirement for starting the negotiating process. The EU admitted Cyprus last year despite the failure of a UN bid to reunite the island, split along ethnic lines since Turkey invaded in 1974 in response to a coup by Greek Cypriots backed by the junta then in Athens. Turkey still has not recognised the Greek Cypriot administration in Nicosia as the sole legitimate representative of the whole island. EU ambassadors will meet this Wednesday.
