Pakistani gang rape survivor Mukhtar Mai has been nominated as a candidate for this year’s European Parliament Sakharov Prize for Freedom of thought. Others whose names have been put forward include Hauwa Ibrahim for her defense in Nigeria of women accused of adultery; The Sudanese Ibrahim Adam Mudawi, human rights activist;

and dissidents using the InterNet in Tunisia, Iran and China to highlight abuses in their tightly-controlled regimes. Parliament’s Human Rights Commission is where each of the assembly’s political groups presents its choice of individual or organisation to honour for efforts against oppression and injustice. The decision is made later and the prize is awarded in December.
