Critics say Chernobyl report underestimates dangers

A UN report to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, which suggests the deadly radiation fallout from the Chernobyl nuclear disaster may be less severe than first thought, is proving controversial.

Initially, it was thought tens of thousands of people might contract fatal cancers following the accident, but the report slashes that projection to just a few thousand. This has angered several environmental pressure groups who say the report does not tell the whole story – and the story that is does tell is flawed.
