The European Parliament opened its first post-summer plenary session in Strasbourg with a minute of silence in remembrance of all the victims of the world’s recent catastrophes: Katrina, the bridge stampede in Iraq, the terrible plane accidents, the floods, and Europe’s deadly forest fires. The assembly’s president, Josep Borrell, noted everyone’s “surprise” at the enormous economic and social effects accompanying what he called a drama which the U.S. is going through.
