Kosovo’s president said to be seriously ill

The president of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, is reported to be seriously ill in a German military hospital.

News agencies quote a senior foreign diplomat. The 61-year-old is undergoing medical tests at a base in Landstuhl in western Germany. Aides earlier said the health of the ethnic Albanian, pro-independence leader had deteriorated after a bout of flu. In May 2002 Rugova and Slobodan Milosevic came face to face at the UN war crimes tribunal in the Hague, in a bitter row over the former Serb leader’s role in the repression of Kosovo in the late 90s. Rugova was elected as the first president of the UN-administered Kosovo in 2002.
