Facing waning support at home, and a rising death toll among soldiers in Iraq, the US president has again urged his country to support him on his foreign policy.

At a navy base in San Diego, George W.Bush marked the 60th anniversary of Tokyo’s surrender at the end of World War Two. Bush said US enemies have made their fight a test of American credibility and resolve, and he vowed that Washington would stay on the offensive. With the number of US troops killed in Iraq now just under 1,900, the president’s approval ratings have plummeted to the lowest levels of his presidency.
