US forces are claiming to have killed an al Qaeda leader and several other fighters in an airstrike in Iraq. A military spokesman in Baghdad said Abu Islam was targeted in a raid on Karabila near the border with Syria.

Earlier an Arabic language station quoted doctors in the region saying that 40 people had been killed in an air strike near the city of Qaim.
