Just nine out of a 115 people survived when a fishing boat carrying illegal immigrant from Ecuador to the United States sank in the Pacific.

The wooden vessel was designed to carry just 15 people but was crammed with a hundred more. The survivors clung to wreckage and spent days in freezing water after lastweeks accident. One said a wave had capsized the boat and the next thing he knew he was clinging onto a barrel. The dead and survivors were some of the half-a-million Ecuadorians who’ve left their country in the past six years. They pay people traffickers thousands of dollars to transport them by sea to Central America or Mexico where they then try to get into the US on foot.
