Israeli and Palestinian police are on high alert to prevent violence over the Gaza pullout. The handover of power has already effectively taken place at the Erez border crossing checkpoint. Around 7,500 Palestinian security men have begun deploying near settlements as a cordon against possible efforts by Palestinian militants to shoot at departing settlers.

The security forces are also there to prevent Palestinians charging into empty houses to seize property. Palestinian troops have reportedly been seen moving into the southern town of Rafah, a flashpoint throughout five years of violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
