Palestinians troops prepare to deploy in Gaza

Palestinian security forces are preparing for a new mission – they are about to deploy in Gaza after the Israeli with drawal which is due to begin on Monday. As part of the preparations, the police, riot police officers and the Palestinian President’s national security force have been carrying out joint drills.

The new 5,000-strong force is being trained to pre-empt a security vacuum after the Israeli pullout and to ensure order when thousands of Palestinians begin to pour into the former settlements to celebrate. Israel says it could take weeks to evacuate the settlements – perhaps longer if settler homes are to be demolished.
