Israeli pullout protesters stopped in their tracks

Thousands of Israelis protesting at the government’s Gaza Strip withdrawal have suspended a march on settlements after police and soldiers blocked their path.

However, it is thought 100 people did manage to get through the security cordon, possibly with the help of sympathetic security forces. They are said to have made it the Gush Katif enclave while others had to return to Ofakim. The evacuation of the Gaza Strip would be Israel’s first removal of Jewish settlements from territory the Palestinians want for a state. Supporters believe it could help the peace process. But opposition among Israelis has been growing steadily in recent months.
