The renowned Dutch artist Constant Nieuwehnhuys has died at the age of 85.
The painter and writer was a founding member of the influential Cobra movement.
The group, which was established in 1948, was comprised of artists from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam. It took its name from the first letters of each city and animal imagery was a regular feature of the movement’s work.
Contant’s work was initially conventional in style and but through the 1940s he become more affected by Cubism, German Expressionism and Cezanne. His involvement in political and social affairs grew with his art.
