Clinton hails potential of IRA move


The IRA’s decision to cease all armed activity and pursue its aims through politics has been saluted by former US President Bill Clinton, who played an active role in efforts to resolve the Northern Ireland conflict. “The announcement that the IRA made today is potentially the biggest thing to happen in this peace process since the Good Friday agreement,” he told reporters.

“And, if it is done and verified, it represents the fulfilment of something I have worked for since 1994, both as president as later as a private citizen.” The White House also hailed the announcement, adding that the IRA must follow up by renouncing all other criminal activities, a sentiment Bill Clinton echoed.
