The funeral of the Brazilian shot dead by police in London was due to take place today. Crowds gathered at every stage of the return of the body of Jean-Charles de Menezes to his hometown, Gonzaga.The electrician was gunned down by plain clothes police last Friday, the day after the botched attempt to plant four more bombs on London’s transport system. Police say he ignored warnings to stop – possibly because of problems over his visa. Back home a woman expresses the sorrow of a whole village, saying she felt like his mother the pain was so big. While the death has outraged Brazil, the head of London’s Metropolitan Police force has defended his officers. Sir Ian Blair, described the shooting as a “tragedy” but said nevertheless his men had no choice under the circumstances.
