The Irish Republican Army has announced it has formally ordered an end to its armed activity against British rule. The group says it intends to pursue its aims by political means. An announcement had been expected as the IRA’s political ally Sinn Fein had been intensifying contacts with the British and Irish governments after calling for the paramilitaries to end armed struggle in April. Crimes it was accused of fanned calls for the group to disband and sparked harsh censure of Sinn Fein from traditional supporters.
