Kidnapped Algerian envoys killed by al-Qaeda

Al-Qaeda’s Iraq wing says it has killed the two Algerian envoys it claimed to have kidnapped last week. The statement was posted on a website often used by the group led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. Mission chief Ali Belaroussi, who was 62, and the 47-year-old attache AzzedineBelkadi were snatched by gunmen last Thursday near their embassy. Their deaths come after the murder of the Egyptian envoy – Ihab el-Sherif – earlier this month. That killing was also claimed by Zarqawi’s group. The envoys of Pakistan and Bahrain have been shot at in the past weeks, prompting an exodus of diplomats from Baghdad. It is thought terrorists are trying to undermine the legitimacy of the US-backed Iraqi government abroad.
