Death of Star Trek’s Scotty

James Doohan, 85, the actor who played the feisty Scottish chief engineer in the original 1960s Star Trek series, has died at his home in Seattle.

Doohan suffered complications from pneumonia and Alzheimer’s disease, about a year after he was diagnosed with the degenerative illness. He last appeared in public in October, when he was honoured with a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. Although a prolific radio actor in his native Canada, he will be best remembered for playing Star Trek’s engineer Montgomery Scott. The role was immortalized by the catchphrase “Beam me up Scotty”.
