After London, where next wonders Europe

After London the danger signs are going up in Europe’s capitals one by one; at least in those that are implicated in the war in Iraq. All are worried that they might be next on the terrorist’s list of targets for revenge, and officials like Italy’s Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu are warning governments to be more vigilant.“Today, after Madrid and London, I’m here to tell you that terrorism is knocking on Italy’s door, and the doors of other European countries,” he said in Italy’s parliament.New police powers are being suggested across the continent to deal with the dangers, but at least on Italian streets there seems to be a feeling of inevitability that the violence is on its way.“I take the bus just like every other day. I’ve got no choice to go to work, so I’m scared every day,” said one woman.“It’s going to happen sooner or later because it’s happened in every country that’s in Iraq,” said another.Pisanu, like many other European ministers, is seeking cross-party concensus for tougher security, but many critics say the only sure defence is non-involvement in Iraq.
