Lebanese minister targeted by car bomb

Lebanon’s outgoing defence minister has survived an assassination attempt after a powerful car bomb went off in Beirut. Elias al-Murr was only slightly injured when a device with around 100kg of explosives ripped through his motorcade. Two other people were killed and several were wounded. Security sources say the bomb was detonated by remote control. This is not the first attack on a politician or a prominent figure in Lebanon. There have been a series of bombings against anti-Syrian opposition figures since late last year. However, Murr is a staunch supporter of Damascus. Several Lebanese officials visited him in hospital, including Saad Hariri, son of the former prime minister, who himself was killed by a car bomb in February. He said the killings must be resisted because “all of Lebanon was under attack.”
