Beirut bomb targets outgoing minister

Lebanon’s caretaker Defence Minister, Elias Al-Murr, has been hurt by a powerful explosion in Beirut. Officials say he was only slightly wounded in the blast but two other people were killed with several others injured.

Security officials say the blast targetted Al-Murr’s motorcade in the busy Christian suburb of Antelias. Black smoke billowed over the area as emergency services rushed to the scene near a major highway. This is not the first attack on a politician or a prominent figure in Lebanon. Most of the victims have been anti-Syrian but the outgoing minister was a supporter of the government in Damascus. Since late last year there have been a series of bombings including a massive blast in February that killed ex-Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri.
