The European Commission is asking the Court of Justice to slap hefty fines on France until it comes around. Nearly ten years ago, the EU’s top court ruled that Paris had not done the necessary — to make sure its fleet was only landing fish that met minimum size rules — monitoring and enforcement. Take them out too small and the renewal of stocks is seriously compromised is the theory. Until the French tighten their nets and comply with the European rules, if the verdict to be announced today goes against them, they could pay a high price per catch.
