The United States president has condemned the attacks, pointing to the sharp contrast between the aims of the G8 summit and those of the attackers.
George W Bush reiterated his commitment to fighting his war on terror. “The contrast between what we see on the TV screens here and what is taking place here is incredibly vivid to me,” he said.
“On the one hand we have people here who are working to alleviate poverty and to help rid the world of the pandemic of AIDS, and working on ways to have a clean environment, and on the other hand you have people killing innocent people.
“The contrast couldn’t be clearer between the intentions and the heart of those of us who care deeply about human rights, human liberty, and those who kill, those who have such evil in their heart that they will take the lives of innocent folks. The war on terror goes on.”
The US government has raise its terrorism alert for buses, subways and trains across the country, although it said the move was not a response to a specific threat.
